Purpose of the Position

  • To set-up and operate gear department machinery.
  • To look for ways to improve department efficiency and product quality.

Duties:

  • Set-up and operate machines to hob, shaper cut, chamfer, shave, and inspect gears.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems.
  • Ensure that gears are machined to specifications.
  • Maintain department and job documentation.
  • Maximize output without damaging or prematurely wearing cutters.
  • Assist management with development of new gears.
  • Train others in the gear department in all aspects of gear machining.
  • Lead all aspects of gear machining under the authority of the shop managers.
  • Occasionally perform other shop duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must know set-up, operation, and math required to machine spur, bevel, and helical gears.
  • Must be able to work from a sample gear as well as from prints.
  • Must have experience with Barber Coleman gear hobbers and Fellows shaper cutters.
  • Must know all aspects of gear hobbing, shaper cutting, chamfering, and shaving.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with others even in challenging situations.
  • Must be able to effectively teach others their trade skills.
  • Experience with CNC gear hobbing machines is a plus.
  • Must be willing to learn CNC machine operation.
  • Be able to lift 35 lbs. repeatedly daily and up to 60 lbs. occasionally.
